Welcome to our Discoverers class page 2021/22
We are the Year 3 class at Warren Hills Community Primary School. Our teacher is Miss Bourne and Mrs Woolley is the teaching assistant supporting us in our class.
PE this term will be on Monday. Swimming will be every Tuesday starting from 12th January.
Please ensure that your child has an indoor kit consisting of a white t-shirt, dark shorts and plimsolls and also an outdoor kit consisting of dark tracksuit bottoms or leggings, a white t-shirt and a pair of trainers. Please ensure that long hair is tied back, earrings must be removed (if your child cannot remove earrings themselves, please ensure that they are taken out before they come to school).
When swimming, please ensure your child comes with a swimming costume, towel, swimming hat and £1.50 for the cost of swimming.
We Love Reading
In our class, we know how important reading is to help us learn and we follow a reading scheme in our school called Read, Write, Inc. We each have a home reading folder to bring our books home in every day and a yellow reading record. We enjoy reading at home and know how important it is to practise with our parents/carers regularly to help us become successful readers.
A note from the teacher: Please ensure that your child brings their home reading folder back to school every day and remember to enjoy spending some time listening to your child read each day.
Spring 2 2022

Spring 1 2022

Autumn 2 2021
You’re an engineer, a scientist, a maker of men (iron men, of course). Explore the scientific world of forces and magnetism, metals and materials. Expand your mind as you test and trial, build and move. Which force is at play as you slide down a slide or swing on a swing? Can you explain why magnets repel and attract? Can you make a penny look shiny and new or build a steel band from pots and pans? Then, meet Hogarth the Iron Man’s companion. The Iron Man wants a friend. Can you build him one? You must make him strong, sturdy and ready to rumble. If you were a metal, which one would you be? Gold, a shimmering, precious and costly mineral? Or steel, that strong and useful alloy? Maybe you’re iron, malleable and easy to shape, but ready to rust. Maybe you’re not a metal at all, but a force to be reckoned with.
Science
We have been discovering how magnets work and which magnets are the strongest by comparing how many paperclips different magnets can hold.

We have also been investigating which liquid (vinegar, lemon juice, tomato sauce and coke) was the best at cleaning old pennies. We observed their results over time and discussed how we could keep a fair test. Our school Secretary was very happy to have such clean pennies back!
Art
We have been recreating Iron Man using foil by embossing his face onto the foil. We drew the design and then copied this carefully onto the foil after. It was difficult but we showed resilience!
Autumn 1 2021
Take a moment to step outside and stand quietly and still. Turn off all your technology and try to forget the modern world. Imagine this place 5000 years ago. What would you have seen? Head back to prehistoric times to gather berries and hunt down dinner. Unearth ancient objects and visit astonishing mystical monuments that reveal the secrets of an ancient time. Learn how the people of Britain developed over thousands of years, from the Stone Age to the Roman invasion. Work as a tribe to build a seasonal monument to celebrate the coming of spring. Then sit quietly and reflect, waiting for the sunrise. What tribal tales will you have to tell?
Stone Age Shenanigans
We have been busy learning about the past and in particular the mysteries of Stone Age to Iron Age Britain. We have been working as archaeologists uncovering ideas about the past as well as creating Stone Age pottery and attending workshops that helped us develop our chronology of these periods.
Science
We have been studying plants in this half term. We have been looking at the parts of a plant, their functions and have developed our skill of making careful and scientific observations and diagrams. Additionally, we have also identified the role of insects as pollinators through reenacting the 'Waggle Dance' as well as making scientific observations of seeds in various fruit.
Summer 1
Welcome to the first of the summer term. We will be looking at Flow, which is our rivers topic. We will be studying local rivers (River Trent), identifying features of rivers, explaining the water cycle and creating our own interpretations of rivers.

We also studied maps and learnt how to read 4 and even 6 figure grid references by applying our reading of graph (maths) skills. We mapped the route of the local area as well as mapped and identified the route of the River Trent. We found this hard but we persevered!
In science we looked at nutrition and the human body. We identified that humans and animals need a balanced diet as well as identifying the different food groups. We then made our our own healthy meal using play dough.
Discoverers - 2020/2021
Information
The staff in Discoverers class this year will be Mr Daren (class teacher), Mrs Williamson (teaching assistant) and Mrs Smith (teaching assistant).
Our PE days are: Tuesday (swimming) and Fridays with Mr Stevens.
As we are swimming straight away, the children will need to bring their swimming kit in every Tuesday. They will need to bring a towel, swimming costume, hat and £1.50 for swimming. If your child does not have a swimming hat, one can be purchased from the swimming pool for £1.80.
For our other PE session, your child will need to bring in a suitable PE kit such as a t-shirt, shorts/joggers and plimsols/suitable footwear.
Multiplication
Times table facts underpin nearly every concept within maths, from money, time and shape and measure. With this in mind, it is important for your child to practise all of their times tables, especially the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
Below is a table of the times tables that your child will need to know by the end of Key Stage 2.
Reading
Reading is an essential tool for life and the curriculum has placed an integral part on the role of reading not only as a skill, but also for reading to be enjoyed and loved. Due to this, we are asking that you spend 15 minutes a day with your child listening to them read by helping them with tricky words and make sense of what is happening in the text too. Below are a list of websites that include age appropriate texts (both fiction and non-fiction) and are engaging for your child.
Welcome back after the extended break! We will be covering some exciting and fascinating projects this year but we start our learning journey by delving into the Stone Age to Iron Age and exploring what is meant by pre-history. We will be focusing on different Stone Age settlements in Britain, analysing a range of Stone Age evidence and creating our Stone Age art. Look at the overview for this year to gain a better understanding of our learning journey.
Autumn 2
Welcome back after our half-term break. This term we will be studying the topic of 'Mighty Metals' where we will be looking at the use of metals as well as working with them too. Our book focus will be The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. PE is still every Thursday
Spring 1- Welcome to our new topic Gods and Mortals. We will be studying the achievements of the Ancient Greeks and then deciding just what exactly they gave to us and how much of Western civilization has taken from them.

Summer 1
I hope you have had a restful and chocolaty Easter year 3. Unfortunately, current events mean I don't get to see you but rest assured I am still thinking of you all and Maggie misses you all too! I will still set work via Weduc each week. Don't worry if you can't complete all of it, just do as much as you can.

Welcome to your child's new challenge, Key Stage 2! This half term, we are covering the history topic of the Stone Age to the Iron Age. Below is the outline for what we intend to cover.
Autumn 1 Stone Age Poo day! The children were archaeologists for the day and were dissecting poo to see what they could learn from Stone Age people’s diets. They realised they ate a range of seeds and also found that they had intestinal worms!
Science Rocks!
Discoverers have loved learning about the various rocks and stones that can be found in our local area. Once collected, they have used classification keys to classify the type of rocks they are from metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous. We have also been creating and observing over time our very own fossils made out of jelly snakes. We have left them and then peeled back each layer to see how the fossils have moulded and formed.
Roald Dahl’s birthday
To celebrate the amazing author’s birthday, we decided to perform our very own performance poetry of his Revolting Rhymes.

We hope you enjoyed your time off and had a well earned beak.
Our topic this term is the Ancient Greeks and we will be earning all about their influences on western culture.
Our PE/forest school day is still Friday, so please remember to bring in suitable clothing.

In science, Discoverers have been investigating the effects of magnetic attraction on different materials as well as investigating whether all coins were magnetic.
Gods and Mortals
Our topic this half term is God’s and Mortals where we are studying the lives and perils of the Ancient Greeks. Discoverers researched the turbulent and chaotic life of the King of the Gods: Zeus! They researched facts and then made fantastic fact files about the main man himself!
Marvellous maths
Discoverers have been busy practising using concrete resources to help them make sense of place value and the number system. They are secure and are conquering the world of fractions.
Meticulous multiplication
Discoverers have been learning about how to use the grid method in maths when multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. They have been using concrete resources as well as pictoral methods to help them understand the process.
Heroic Hoplites
Discoverers learnt all about Greek soldiers and warfare. They discovered the names of the armour and weapons they used to the marching formation they were in too. They drew around each other and labelled parts of the soldier.
Partners in Science
Discoverers have learnt all about magnetism and other interesting forces this term. They have investigated which are the strongest magnets, whether magnetism works underwater and then applied their learning when designing magnetic board games. Because they were so eager to play with them, they went into the Rainbows class and taught them how to play.
Spring Term 2
Welcome back after the break, which was most needed, and prepare for your child to be entwined and immersed into the windy, flowing and fast-moving topic of rivers. We will be focusing on a river's journey, local rivers and global rivers too.
We have stopped swimming on a Tuesday so please do not bring in swimming kits however we do have Forest Schools on every Friday so please bring suitable clothes for your child.
PE is now on a Tuesday so please remember to send your child with the correct PE kit every week.
Below is what we intend to cover this term.
Behaviour Reward
At the beginning of this half-term, I set the Discoverers a challenge: to see if they could reach 50 behaviour points. If they did, then they got to meet my dog, Maggie.
Bradgate Park Trip
To open our new topic on rivers, we decided to look at the River Lin in Bradgate Park. Discoverers identified some different features such as meanders, waterfalls and channels. They even got a chance to feel how cold and how fast they water was flowing.
Making rivers
Discoverers then had their chance of making their very own river system using play dough. Can you spot the meanders, source, mouth and oxbow lake?
Spring term
Welcome back to the Spring term. We hope you have had a lovely Christmas and are ready to work hard in the new year.
We are still swimming so please remember to bring in swimming kits, towels, swimming hats and £1.50.

Our Museum Trip
Discoverers and Pioneers descended onto the Thintank Museum in Birmingham as they learnt all about the fascinating world of light and it's many properties, including how shadows are formed, how light travels and different sources of light. The then took this learning back into the classroom and applied the knowledge by creating shadow puppet performances for their peers.
Marvellous maps
Our topic on Urban Pioneers involved us looking at maps of our local area. The children devoured the maps (not literally) and were fascinated to see where key places were in their locality. They even matched key ordnance map symbols to where they were placed on the map, then wrote down their 4 figure grid reference. Impressive stuff!
Investigating Integers!
Discoverers have been busy discovering ways of making a total by using number V's. They were not allowed to use the same number more than once and this proved incredibly challenging!
